Dumb Down
I bid on a coupla jobs a few months ago thru a connection I had created with a guy that sold very high end components and home theaters. So he wanted me to do a home theater in his "basement" which was not your normal hole in the ground (his existing pallette included shiny black and bright red leather theater seating).
So I designed something for him that was really pretty cool - solid padauk (red) frames around panels of high gloss black laminate surrounding his 60 inch plasma screen with accompanying 5 foot high black silk removable speaker covers left and right of the screen; matching custom milled padauk crown molding was designed for the ceiling area on the "screen wall". All for about $2650. When I gave him the price you'd think I'd just told him I wanted to sleep with his mom.
When I finally dumbed down the style to a point that I didnt even want to do it - it was still "too fancy"
He turned me on to a Doctor who wanted a "beautiful entertainment center" designed and built.
Essentially the same thing happened - really nice custom design - two piece unit - top and bottom, solid cherry, glass shelves with ambient lighting and cooling fans, etc etc....
Verdict?
Dumb it down.

So now I'm in New Orleans and the architectural significance and character of the homes here requires creative, highly skilled carpenters in order to maintain that sense. Not only that, but people here are interested in creating new work with that feel too. So highly skilled carpenters are a prized commodity and all of a sudden it's "let's smarten it up" instead of "dumbin it down".
And not only that, people here understand when you have the "feel" for comprehending what's required to take a simple plan to the next level - and ENCOURAGE IT.....,tell you they want to hire you in their corporations......,develop partnerships with you in real estate ventures.
Yeah Homey, we a long way from fucking kansas
And today Habitat For Humanity finally called back. 3 pm tomorrow and I get to see what its all about - what I came down here to do.
